Gypsy moths are now found in Asia, Europe and North America (DAFF, 2009).
The European strain of gypsy moth was first identified in the eastern United States in 1869 and then spread to Canada in 1924 (DAFF, 2009).
The Asian strain of gypsy moth was originated in eastern Asia (DAFF, 2009). The Asian gypsy moth is currently found in eastern Russia, China, Korea ,Japan (PHA, 2012; DAFF, 2009). In the early 1990s this pest was introduced to North America but was eradicated successfully due to the conduct of eradication programs (DAFF, 2009).
Asian gypsy moth was discovered in New Zealand in 2003 and an eradication program was immediately conducted to prevent its spread and establishment (DAFF, 2009).
